Aloha!
In addition to presenting the newest episode of our podcast, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Jason Hirata (who has adopted the nickname of Kira) to the podcast staff as our Anime & Manga Contributor. He has been a fan since our first episode, and we are very much looking forward to working with him.
This episode also includes the debut of
The Gauntlet, a new topic where we place a contributor on, "the hot seat" (in this case, a stool) and ask him a series of prepared questions that cover his knowledge of a particular topic (in this case, Anime & Manga.) To help you follow along, I have included in the "Show Notes" section the actual order of the questions that Kira was asked. Please feel free to send in/post your own answers as well.
I also regret to inform you that this episode is the last appearance (for a while, at least) of our Contributor-at-Large Zell, who will be leaving for a 3-month deployment tour (he serves as a submariner in the U.S. Navy.) On behalf of the entire staff here at Otaku 5-0, I wish him a safe cruise and look forward to working with him again soon.
Overall, I am pretty happy with how this episode turned out. We didn't stray off topic as much, and we did our best to keep things clean yet entertaining. Also, when you factor in that nobody got hurt (emotionally or otherwise), then that's pretty much all I can ask for.
Until next time,
Totoro (Creator, Executive Producer)

A.What was the title that introduced you to anime?
It was either Getter Robo, Grandizer, or Voltes V (5). I don't remember which one came first for me.
B. What title would you recommend to someone who's interested in anime, but hasn't seen any?
I would say Casshern or maybe Samurai Champloo.
C. There are a lot of pre-conceived notions about anime, especially from non-fans. Which notion would you say is least accurate? I have to go with "It's only for kids." Is it because it is a cartoon? No. Most anime are gore-ish, ecchi, or very violent, way too much for kids.
D. Anime has many different underlying messages. What do you think is the most prevalent to today's (Post-9/11) world? Hmm... it's the usual... never give up!
E. Suppose the largest portion of anime viewers are between 7 to 14 years of age. What selection(s) would you recommend to that demographic so they can enjoy more mature forms of anime? Ikkitousen. Hot girl martial artists. It's violent and pretty ecchi.
F. What are your view regarding the quality of subtitles/dubbing currently being produced by U.S. anime distributors? Dubbing... sucks recently. I think back in the day was pretty good (80s and 90s). Subtitles is the best way to go. I think recent fansubs has been pretty good.
G. When you take a manga series and translate it into an anime, there are always going to be differences between the two. Name an anime that (in your opinion) sticks the closest to and one that has most deviated from its source material? One Piece anime sticks pretty close to the manga, despite the fillers. The one that has most deviated... probably Akira. The movie has a different story from the manga, but it does have the same concept.
H. What does the word "Otaku" mean to you? A hardcore fan.
I. What anime character is most representative of you as a person? Hmmm... Luffy from One Piece. I usually have a strong will when I want something I guess, and I laugh at silly things and is pretty clueless sometimes. Not much of a leader but when put in a situation, I can get things done.
J. Name a current anime title that will be called a classic 10 years from now. I would also have to say Casshern!
This has got to be one of the shortest episode haha. It was good and hello to Kira.
Sorry quick announcement... but the passes will end before MIDNIGHT of March 31... but PLEASE HURRY!!! ALso look forward to April Newsletter! Coming out soon :D
Nice solid entertaining episode.
Also a really great piece of tech from sci-fi would be a "desk" from Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game
For the record, Ikkitousen has some pretty raunchy scenes going on, with characters engaging in lesbian affairs and lots of sadomistic/masochistic tendencies .... PG-13, maybe, but I still wouldn't recommend it to such a young demographic.
